Altoona Mirror, May 2013
Students from Team 2 spent two days cleaning up parks around the Altoona area. A group of 25 students walked to 2nd Ward park and spent the afternoon clearing winter debris and sprucing up the area. While working, a couple of neighbors came over to offer their help! They thanked the kids for helping their neighborhood. Later in May, over 100 students traveled to Highland Park to rake leaves, clean up branches, and paint park benches. Many users of the park stopped to acknowledge the kids' clean-up efforts. One woman commented on how refreshing it was to see youngsters building up their areas instead of always tearing it down. She was very proud of the kids and offered to call the newspaper for us! The students worked, had a picnic lunch, took a tour of the woods, calculated the forest succession, experimented in camoflauge, and ended with some good old-fashioned playtime! What
a great feeling to serve the community and have fun while doing it!
